Care and Treatment of Athletes
Conditions Treated
Our sports cardiology team evaluates a variety of exercise-related cardiac problems, including:
- Heart murmurs
- Family history of a heart condition or sudden cardiac death
- Abnormal electrical activity of the heart (ECG abnormalities)
- Imaging test abnormalities
- Enlarged heart condition (cardiomyopathy)
- Athlete's heart condition
- Disqualification or restriction from training or competition
We evaluate athletes with the following signs and symptoms:
- Syncope (loss of consciousness), or near syncope during, or after physical exertion
- Chest pain, pressure, or discomfort that is experienced during, or after physical exertion
- Excessive fatigue or shortness of breath on exertion
- Heart palpitations and cardiac arrhythmic conditions including supraventricular tachycardia, WPW, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia
- ECG/EKG abnormalities
- Faster than normal heart rate, called tachycardia, when at rest or exercise
- Failure to perform up to expectations or drop in performance
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
For Patients
PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
If you are scheduled for an exercise test, please bring clothes and shoes suitable for running. Do not eat two hours before your appointment.
EMERGENCY CASES
We will see urgent cases, particularly if you are a competitive athlete, within one day. Outside of normal clinic hours, patients are seen at the Sports Medicine clinic.
