Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program (DEACTIVATED)
Leaders in Kidney and Pancreas Transplant
The first kidney transplantation in California was performed at Stanford in 1960. The Stanford Kidney Transplant Program started in 1991. Since its inception, Stanford doctors within the program have performed more than 1,200 kidney transplants. From the outset, our goal has not only been to deliver the finest care possible, but to also pioneer new treatment methods that improve patient outcomes both short- and long-term.
Our Doctors
Care and Treatment for Kidney Transplants
Leaders in Kidney Transplantion
The kidney transplant program at Stanford is currently directed by Dr. Stephan Busque and Dr. John Scandling. The transplant team includes a full range of clinicians to ensure that you get the best, most thorough care possible.
Our team includes surgeons, nephrologists, nurse coordinators, social workers, financial coordinators, patient care coordinators, transplant psychiatrists and a variety of other caregivers and support staff.
Living donor team
As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, we, provide care coordination and advocacy for the prospective living organ donor. We coordinate the full continuum of the living donor process, obtain a medical history, provide education to the potential donors and their family members, assess the potential donors' needs, and arrange living donor kidney transplants. We continue providing care and support to our donors even after donation.
Pre transplant patient care coordinators
We are the first point of contact and process all incoming referrals. We arrange for evaluation appointments with the nurse educators and physician, medical studies, consultations, and outside services to complete the transplant/donor evaluation process as efficiently as possible. We support our patients throughout the evaluation process by providing education, instructions and directing them to resources available.
Post transplant patient care coordinators
We help our transplanted patients obtain services in a timely manner and assure efficient utilization of the nurses and physicians' appointment schedule. We arrange for medical studies, track results and manage medication refill requests. We inform our patients about their appointments, how to prepare for a study and where to go. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, we support our patients as they transition to their new life style after transplantation/donation.
Pre transplant coordinators
We coordinate the evaluation of pre-transplant patients referred to our program for adult kidney or pancreas transplantation. The process begins at the time of the initial referral and continues through transplantation. We educate our patients in regards to physical and psychosocial implications of transplant, obtain medical history, inform patients about further consultations/studies required to complete the evaluation process and list patients with UNOS when appropriate. We monitor our patients' health status during the waiting time prior to their transplant surgery.
Post transplant and inpatient coordinators
As a member of a multi-disciplinary team and along with the rest of the team, we educate and support our patients as they transition and adjust to their new life style after their surgery. We ensure that recipients of a kidney or pancreas transplant are informed about how to best care for themselves after transplantation, are educated about signs and symptoms of infection and rejection, and how to comply with medication regimen prescribed to them. We educate our patients in post operative management and arrange for their follow up appointments.
Independent donor advocate
An Independent Donor Advocate (IDA) is responsible for making certain that the rights of a potential organ donor are fully represented. IDAs serve as living donor resources and advocates from the time that a potential living donor contacts the transplant program as well as after donation.
Transplant social work
We are responsible for assessing the psychological, social, and cultural needs that impact transplant recipients/living donors prior to as well as after surgery. We educate our patients regarding resources available in the community, help problem solve at the time of crisis, and assist in seeking therapeutic interventions when needed. Our goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible for all our patients.
Transplant dietitian
I help transplant patients and their families learn about a healthful, enjoyable diet to speed recovery after surgery and maintain health throughout life. I also provide education and care to pre- and post-organ transplant patients with Diabetes through the Transplant Diabetes Program.
Transplant pharmacist
As member of a multidisciplinary team, the transplant pharmacist makes rounds with the transplant team and offer services such as therapeutic drug monitoring and providing drug information about potential side effects and drug interactions. The pharmacist, alongside other transplant team members, helps to counsel kidney and pancreas transplant recipients on their individualized drug regimens.
Diabetes education team
We address diabetes through a multidisciplinary approach. Transplant physicians, diabetes educators, endocrinologists, nurse transplant coordinators, registered dietitians and pharmacists work together to coordinate comprehensive quality care that is accessible to the patient. We believe that the person with diabetes and their family are the most important members of the diabetes team. Diabetes affects each person differently and we help create individualized treatment programs that accommodate a patient's needs and optimize their health.

Financial coordinators
The financial coordinator's work begins at the time of referral, verifying coverage and ensuring all approvals are in place for services. All patients will receive a financial packet with personalized benefit information. We are available to assist patients in all aspects of their insurance needs including counseling, assistance with Medicare/Medi-cal application process, additional coverage needs, or coverage changes.
Data coordinator
The data coordinator is an integral part of the transplant team ensuring accurate data collection, data entry, verification and reporting. The data coordinator ensures timely completion of registry forms required by UNOS and other regulatory agencies. Working closely with the clinical staff and physicians, the coordinator ensures integrity of the data for each patient.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
