Stanford Health Care has a long history of advances in heart surgery. Breakthroughs include the world’s first heart transplant more than 50 years ago. In the decades since, Stanford specialists have refined surgical techniques, including the development of bloodless cardiac surgery, customized to each patient’s needs.
Bloodless surgery, also known as transfusion-free surgery, is a technique that uses no blood products or transfusions during surgery. Our doctors perform bloodless cardiac surgery as an alternative for those who need heart surgery and want a bloodless approach for religious or personal reasons.
