Clinical Trials
Clinical trials test new drugs, devices, or other therapies before they become widely available. As a Stanford patient, you may have the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial — one of the many benefits of receiving your care here. Our Digestive Health Center offers a number of promising clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently recruiting participants or that may recruit participants in the near future. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but similar studies may open in the future.
By partnering with researchers across Stanford School of Medicine and the larger university community, the Digestive Health Center offers you expert care in an academic medical center setting. Our doctors conduct groundbreaking research and participate in national medical associations, helping define the standards of care for digestive disorders. General GI
- Studies of the bacteria within the gut (the microbiome) and how they affect both specific GI conditions and overall health, including the immune system.
Liver Disease
- Research into the biology of end-stage liver disease to identify new therapeutic opportunities.
- Participation in the national Hepatitis B Research Network to study how this serious liver infection can increase the risk for liver failure, liver cancer, and cirrhosis.
- Development of the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD). This nationally adopted index helps assess the transplant eligibility of people with end-stage liver disease and prioritize allocation of organs.
GERD
- Development of new implantable devices such as vagal nerve stimulators and the EndoStim that may help regulate digestive function. We are the only program in the Bay Area currently enrolling for the EndoStim clinical trial.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Research into nutrition and herbal remedies that may help heal the intestines and allow IBD patients to avoid surgery.
- Studies of new endoscopic treatments for Crohn’s disease and colitis. Our doctors pioneered many of the treatments used today, including for digestive tract reconstruction.
Colon Cancer
- Research into the barriers that prevent certain populations from accessing colon cancer screenings, with the goal of increasing screening rates.
