Care and Treatment
Aging Adults: Advice for Caregivers
Of course, you want to and need to help. Your best approach is to position yourself as a means of support or a partner, rather than the one in control. In this way you are simply another member of your loved one's health care team.
- How you can help:
Offer to help only if needed. If your loved one cannot make his or her own medical appointments, help them do so. - Make a list of questions to ask the doctor, so you don't forget to discuss important issues with the doctor.
- Inform the doctor ahead of time if you have concerns that your parent may be less than truthful about their health.
- Attend the appointment with your parent or loved one, or find someone else who can if you are unable.
- Make sure that you understand what the doctor is saying. We encourage you to ask questions until you are sure you understood everything.
- Ask for a HIPAA release form so that the doctor can speak to you directly about you parent's health conditions.
- Bring a list of medications that your parent is currently taking.
- Learn about possible side effects or interactions of any medicine the doctor prescribes.
