Advanced Practice Provider roles include physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). APPs are medical providers who treat, diagnose, prescribe, and perform or assist in surgical procedures in collaboration with physicians.
Formally launched in 2012, the Center for Advanced Practice at Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a nationally renowned institute dedicated to promoting the role of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP), especially as APPs play an increasingly visible role in health care both at SHC and throughout the nation.

Meet our APP team
Formally launched in 2012, the Center for Advanced Practice at Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a nationally renowned institute dedicated to promoting the role of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP), especially as APPs play an increasingly visible role in health care both at SHC and throughout the nation. CAP develops processes and provides resources for the APPs within the organization in over 80 specialties in both inpatient and outpatient settings at SHC CAP is focused on supporting and cultivating APPs to empower them to providing outstanding and value-focused patient care. CAP has developed various programs and initiatives supporting wellness and professional development of APPs, leading to increased engagement and professional fulfillment. This innovative administrative infrastructure and centralization of resources for APPs has hospitals around the country looking to SHC as an example of how to structure their APP practices.
The Center for Advanced Practice (CAP) is committed to supporting the professional development of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are integral members of the health care team. Over the last few years, the number of APPs within the institution has increased to over 500 (compared to less than 100 in 2007). CAP has championed the growth in APP numbers through various initiatives which focus on increasing APP engagement, recruiting and retaining exemplary APPs, and optimizing the multidisciplinary care team. Members of the CAP team have demonstrated dedication and passion towards empowering APPs within our organization so that they are positioned to provide effective, evidence-based, and efficient care for our patients.

The CAP team has developed several successful recurring programs that are uniquely Stanford. These include the APP Career Ladder to support professional growth, Nationally credentialed APP Fellowship Programs (Clinical and Administrative: The first and only one of its kind for APPs) to support education and transition to practice, APP Onboarding, and the Professional Excellence Program (PEP) to encourage and allow for scholarly work supporting Stanford’s mission to educate.

What is an APP?
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are a group of medical professionals that include nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists and certified nurse midwives, who have undergone specialized education and training. The APPs scope of practice, level of independence and authority varies by the type of APP and by state.
APPs are licensed healthcare professionals, credentialed and privileged through SHC's Medical Staff Office. They work collaboratively with physicians and the care team in all areas of the hospital and clinics to create a seamless environment of care. APPs are highly knowledgeable and serve as an essential part of the development and implementation of patients' care. At Stanford Health Care we have a role agnostic culture. Our APPs are an integral part of the healthcare team.
